This is the first theatrical documentary film made possible by five years of in-depth interviews with world-renowned musician Sakamoto Ryuichi beginning in 2012.

Ryuichi Sakamoto's first feature documentary in 32 years since his 1985 TV film Tokyo Melody Ryuichi Sakamoto (produced in France). Starting with its selection in the Out of Competition section at the 74th Venice Film Festival, the film received the SAMURAI Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Hochi Film Award Special Mention (for the director), and other acclaim both in Japan and abroad.
Through ◆5 years of close-up filming, the film exposes everything from his days with YMO, his success as a film music composer, recent social and environmental issues, and his battle with illness, along with interviews, never-before-seen private footage, and archival footage from the past!
The film was made possible through close interviews with the artist over a five-year period beginning in 2012. The film is full of archive footage, never-before-seen private footage, and rare episodes from Sakamoto's own past, including live footage from his YMO days, "Merry Christmas at the Battlefield," and "The Last Emperor," as well as rare episodes from his music productions at the time. After a year-long battle with the disease, he returned to work on "The Revenant," which won three Academy Awards at the 88th Academy Awards, and "My Mother and I." He then began work on a new album. ◆The production process of "async," his first original album in eight years, released in March 2017, is also closely followed.
The film follows the songwriting process at his home studio in New York and other locations, as well as the creation of new sounds in the woods, in the rain, and even at the Arctic Circle.
